Fiber characterization

Fiber characterization involves the testing of new or existing fiber optic cable to determine its capability to meet the performance standards for multiple wavelength, high speed services (e.g., 10G, 40G, 100G).  TTP will perform multiple tests on designated spans of fiber to determine the quality and transmission capability of that fiber.  Specifically, these tests measure losses and dispersions.  TTP will then provide results that show individual fiber characteristics and limitations, and a determination if the fiber can meet the customer’s required performance standard.

Characterization tests
Before fiber characterization tests are conducted the TTP team will communicate with the customer to determine performance requirements.   We will then develop and provide a test plan for customer approval.  Once on site, we will commence testing to include the following:

Fiber connector and bulkhead inspection and cleaning

Calculation of a fiber link loss budget to determine the maximum optical insertion loss (OIL) then bi-directional testing to compare the calculated value to the testing values

Bi-directional testing to determine optical return loss (ORL)

OTDR testing to identify events in the fiber span, average losses for the events, and the span length

Chromatic Dispersion (CD) testing to determine the pulse spreading of different light waves

Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) testing to determine if there are any physical disorders of the fiber

  • Optical link mapping (OLM) – end-to-end assessment of each fiber link with event characterization and fiber status to allow prompt diagnosis of network issues
